Friends of Tod Creek Watershed

Organization Mandate
To protect and enhance the integrity and biodiversity of Tod Creek Watershed.

We are a group of people who live in the watershed and have come together to enjoy it within the bounds of our mission statement.

Locations
The watershed falls predominantly within the Municipality of Saanich. Also includes parts of the Municipality of Highlands and Central Saanich.

Parts of Gowlland-Tod Provincial Park and Mt. Work Regional Park fall within the watershed.

Creeks: Tod Creek, Killarney Creek, Durrance Creek
Waterbodies: Maltby, Prospect, Durrance and Killarney Lakes and Tod Inlet

Current Activities and Projects
a) FTCW Working Group - working to preserve, protect and improve the quality and health of Tod Creek Watershed. Current projects include restoration of lower reach of main stream entering Prospect Lake. A second, large project involves working with a number of partners to restore and enhance Tod Creek Flats for wildlife and agriculture.

b) Trails ? Identifying and clearing of public rights-of-way for walking trails throughout the watershed. Sharing of information about trails on private land and favorite walks. Horse trails may be a future activity.


d) Education in schools ? Several members are working with local schools with programmes on local birds and Garry Oak Meadow restoration. Members are available for other available for other projects as schools request them.

e) Riparian planting ? Restoration of riparian vegetation where appropriate.

f) Mapping ? Using computer maps from the Municipality of Saanich members are identifying rights-of-way, mapping streams and wetlands, and discovering correct names for geographic features.

Completed Activities and Projects
Group formed late Fall of 2000. All projects are on-going and evolving.

Publications
Watershed Connections. A six-issue publication whose purpose is to connect the community and provide information that will assist watershed residents to live and work in an ecologically sustainable manner. See Prospect Lake Community Association web site for PBF version.

Volunteers Required
We are open to anyone who lives in the watershed and happy to access skills and accommodate interests of any who care to join us. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each second month, September to June at various members homes. Please phone or e-mail for info on next meeting.
