Ecoforestry Institute Society

Organization Mandate
The Ecoforestry Institute Society is dedicated to promoting ecologically, socially and economically responsible forest use that maintains and restores the complexity and diversity of our forests.

The Ecoforestry Institute Society believes that ecoforestry is the science of preserving fully intact forest ecosystems while providing for appropriate levels of commercial timber extraction. It is adaptable to the inclusion of ecological, cultural, heritage, scenic, recreational, wildlife and fisheries objectives within the value set identified for mitigation or maintenance.

To this end, the Ecoforestry Institute Society undertakes the following activities:

1) OUTREACH - The Ecoforestry Institute Society?s goal is to increase public awareness of ecoforestry and its many benefits by working with community organizations, offering workshops, and providing information.

2) Publishes a journal: Ecoforestry (formerly known as the International Journal of Ecoforestry). Editor: Don Vipond

3) CERTIFICATION - The Ecoforestry Institute Society has led and continues to participate in the development of certification standards to provide a credible label on forest products that represent a measure of ecologically based forest practices.

4) TRAINING - The Ecoforestry Institute Society has offered training programs on topics such as forest ecology, and soil monitoring. As part of this training, the Society has facilitated the placement of ?apprentices? with ecoforestry practitioners.

Publications
Ecoforestry
(formerly the International Journal of Ecoforestry)

We have entered a new era of change in forest use. The debate is no longer "should we change," but "how." The challenge is to give a voice to those who are embracing ecologically responsible methods of forest use. If you are among those concerned about or directly affected by forest use and management, you will want to read this journal. Our growing audience includes: private forest landowners, private/public forest land managers, community and non-profit forestry groups, foresters, ecosystem/forestry consultants, value-added processors and manufacturers, and self-employed forest workers, i.e. selective loggers, horse loggers, and special forest product harvesters.
